When custom is the wrong choice

This page's credibility rests on saying this plainly: if your process is standard — payroll, basic accounting, a straightforward CRM need, a simple booking calendar — an off-the-shelf tool will very likely serve you better than a custom build. Established products in these categories have had years of refinement, dedicated support teams and a price built around spreading cost across thousands of customers, none of which a custom build can match for a genuinely standard process. Building custom software to replace a tool that already does the job well is the single most common way clients overspend on software.

The test we use in discovery: if you can name three or more manual workarounds your team performs weekly to make an off-the-shelf tool fit your process, that is usually the sign custom development pays for itself. If you cannot name any, or the workarounds are minor annoyances rather than real friction, we will tell you to keep the existing tool and spend the budget elsewhere. We would rather scope a smaller project — or none at all — than sell a system you do not need; a client who trusts that advice on a small project is the client who calls us for the next one.

It is also worth checking whether your need is really a multi-tenant product to be sold to others, in which case SaaS development is the more accurate scope, or whether you are still validating an idea rather than committing to a full system, in which case MVP development fits better.

What's not included

Custom software development does not include configuring a pre-built ERP, CRM or HRMS platform without custom code — that is scoped under our solutions pages, which start from working foundations rather than a blank build.
